Contest Monsieur LaChaise

Following the great success of last year’s Les Articulés Contest, Art Lab 341, in collaboration with the Town of Brome Lake, is back with an all-new proposal. This time, artists from Brome Lake and the surrounding areas who wish to take part in the project will have the mission of decorating, transforming, and adorning one or more chairs in the style of Land Art.

Starting in June, these chairs will be exhibited throughout the heart of the village of Lac-Brome, allowing visitors to vote for their favorite chair!

Nom/Name(Required)
(Utiliser le numéro de vote situé sur le carton de présentation de votre oeuvre favorite - Use the voting number located on the of presentation sign of your favorite chair.

This contest aims to mobilize 60 artists from Brome Lake and its surroundings by asking them to acquire one or more chairs which they can transform into Land Art pieces, with specific criteria, to be exhibited at various locations in the town.

These chairs will be used to create a circuit in the heart of the village during the summer season. Three cash prizes will be awarded for the 3 most beautiful chairs chosen by the public and by a selection committee.

This type of exhibition has already been highly successful in Canadian cities such as Knowlton, Toronto, Banff, Chicoutimi, where several similar objects have been created by local artists or businesses. For example: mannequins, cows, moose, horses, etc.

OBJECTIVES

  • – Create a tourist attraction starting in the summer of 2024;
  • – Highlight the talent of artists from Brome Lake and its surroundings;
  • – Create a lasting artistic event in the heart of the town.

PROCEDURES

To participate, artists are invited to acquire a chair and transform it into a work of art.

  1. 1. By the end of March, artists will be invited to register and find their own chair(s). They will have 2 months to create a unique work according to the following criteria:
  • – Chairs can be covered in paint, fabric, objects, or even deconstructed!
  • – Plastic chairs, as well as any plastic accessories, are prohibited (flowers, covering, etc.).
  • – Installations must be weather-resistant as they will be exhibited outdoors during the summer of 2024;
  • – Additional chairs may be added;
  • – The artwork can also be used to invite passersby to sit, but this is not mandatory;
  • – The artwork must be safe for the public (for example: no sharp or dangerous surfaces will be allowed);
  • – Overall, it must remain artistic;
  1. 2. A sum of $50 will be provided to participating artists for the purchase of materials, upon presentation of a receipt;

  2. 3. The deadline for completing the work and sending a brief description of the work and the artist’s creative process to ouennassa.khiari@lacbrome.ca is May 25, 2024;

  3. 4. The chairs are to be set up by the artists themselves during the first week of June at the locations assigned to them by the Town. The choice and purchase of the attachment device is the responsibility of the artists (the costs are included in the $50 reimbursed, upon presentation of receipts);

  4. 5. A launch event will be organized in June at the Art Lab gallery;

  5. 6. Both residents and visitors will vote, and an independent committee will determine the winners of the contest. The committee will be composed of Lucy Gagnon, Claire Léger, Diane Laberge, Marie-Josée Gravel, Isabelle Daval, a business owner in Brome Lake, and Michel Gamache, co-owner of Art Lab 341;

  6. 7. Three prizes will be awarded for the three most beautiful installations (chosen by the public and the committee): Cash prizes – 1st prize: $1,000 – 2nd prize: $500 and a People’s Choice Award of $500 in addition to some mentions that will be awarded.
