Riparian buffers

A riparian buffer strip is a vegetated area of at least 15 metres wide, located along watercourses, lakes and ponds. It plays a crucial role in protecting our aquatic ecosystems. This buffer zone filters pollutants, reduces soil erosion and preserves water quality.

Why are they important?

  • Water protection: riparian buffers act as natural filters, trapping sediment, nutrients and pollutants before they reach our waterways.
  • Erosion prevention: the roots of riparian plants stabilize banks, reducing erosion caused by runoff and waves.
  • Wildlife habitat: they provide essential habitat for a variety of wildlife, including birds, amphibians and insects.
