Social media netiquette

The netiquette clearly establishes the rules of conduct and politeness that Town of Brome Lake applies to its various social networks.

Expected Behaviors

Town of Brome Lake wishes to encourage harmonious exchanges on its social media between everyone, but certain behaviors are expected:

  • The use of courteous and respectful language;
  • No personal and/or confidential information about another user, other people or employees;
  • No attacks or insults;
  • No discriminatory, defamatory or sexist comments;
  • No political comments or comments that are derogatory or offensive to the mayor, councillors, Town of Brome Lake or employees;
  • No comments inciting racial, religious, ethnic or other hatred;
  • No foul language;
  • No abusive use of capital letters, as they are often considered a cry or an expression of anger;
  • Comments must be relevant and related to the content of the published topics;
  • No repetitive comments, spam or advertising of any kind.

Neither the Town of Brome Lake’s Facebook page nor any of its other social media should be used to handle complaints or make them public. If you have a complaint, please send it by e-mail to this address: communications@lacbrome.ca.

The Town of Brome Lake does not endorse and is not responsible for any comments or opinions expressed by users.

The Town of Brome Lake authorizes users to add hyperlinks provided that the content is related to the subject matter. It is understood that Town of Brome Lake is not responsible for the content of these external sites.

In addition to the rules listed above, the Town reserves the right to delete the following content without notice:

  • Any accusation, true or false, made against a person, the Municipality or any other organization ;
  • Comments sent repeatedly;
  • Comments that refer to or encourage illegal activities;
  • Any message containing confidential information and/or that may infringe on privacy;
  • Any message that does not comply with the rules set out in this netiquette;
  • Any political message coming from an individual or an organization aiming to conquer or exercise a certain power by defending a number of defined ideas;
  • Any message that contains links to inappropriate websites (that do not concern the Municipality) or that damages Brome Lake’s reputation;
  • Any account created without authorization and using the Town of Brome Lake’s identity.

Moderation

To ensure constructive and respectful exchanges, Town of Brome Lake moderates all comments created or shared on social media. Town of Brome Lake is committed to monitoring its platforms during business hours, Monday to Thursday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Friday, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

The Town of Brome Lake reserves the right to delete any comment that it deems inappropriate or that does not comply with this directive or the terms of use of social media. The Town of Brome Lake may also ban a subscriber or follower if it finds that the latter does not respect the rules established by the present netiquette. A warning will be given in advance.

Response Time

Normally, Town of Brome Lake follows up on exchanges on its Facebook and Instagram pages. We constantly monitor social media. Even if the use of social media implies the notion of speed and immediacy, verifications must sometimes be carried out with the various departments. A delay is therefore to be expected when required.

Respect for Privacy and Protection of Personal Data

Internet users are encouraged to exercise caution and reserve so as not to reveal personal information about themselves or others when they wish to talk about their experiences.

If an Internet user wishes to publish photos or videos on Town of Brome Lake platforms, he or she must ensure that he or she obtains the consent of the persons appearing in the photos or videos. The Town of Brome Lake is not responsible for the content shared by Internet users and undertakes to remove any photo it deems inappropriate.

Town of Brome Lake is required to protect the confidentiality of personal information transmitted to it. It cannot, in any way, deal with a particular case or file on social media, nor disclose information of a confidential nature.
